Anatomy of a session

If you believe the treatment will be effective - you have already covered first base! A positive mindset will influence how you think, feel, and behave towards your treatment. In a nutshell, a positive mindset will bring positive results.

Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment time so as to fill out required client confidential form. Our clinic has a reception/waiting room, and this is where you will fill out the form.

Parking is easy. There is on-street parking on Lyell street, opposite our clinic, or you can enter driveway and park on the left.

Payment. As we do not provide EFTPOS, payments can be made with cash or online banking after the treatment. Please bear in mind herbals and supplements have additional costing above acupuncture treatments.

Private health insurance. If acupuncture is covered as extras with your health insurance then you qualify for a rebate with Bowral Acupuncture. As we do not provide HICAPS, a written receipt will be issued to you with my unique provider number for you to claim.

Session times. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have an allocated 45 minutes timeslot; acupuncture and massage treatment have an allocated time of 60 minutes. Some treatments may not require the full allocated timeslot, due to the nature of the condition.

Your treatment. We have only one treatment room. After your case history has been completed (based on your client confidentiality form), the practical side of your session begins. Your treatment is based on your main presenting complaint, which will determine your acupuncture point and herbal medicine prescriptions (if you are purchasing herbal medicine).

The Massage component in your treatment is approximately 15 minutes. This may either be before, or after, the acupuncture. Hot stones, cupping and massage tools are usually employed to enhance the treatment. The massage medium used is organic coconut oil and beeswax. Healing oils such as arnica may also be utilised.

Acupuncture point prescriptions are based on your main presenting complaint. If you have never had acupuncture before - don't worry - as most people find it a pleasant and relaxing experience. Point prescriptions generally have 10 needles, give or take. The needles are retained for approximately 25 minutes. Electrolysis or moxabustion may be employed to enhance the acupuncture therapy.

How many acupuncture treatments should I require? This is an individual consideration depending on the nature of your condition - and more importantly - whether your presenting complaint is acute or chronic (long-term). For acute conditions, three sessions is usually the benchmark for clinical success, less if you are taking herbal medicine. Chronic conditions tend to take longer to heal as they are more complex and deep seated. Follow-up treatments are usually spaced weekly.

Vs dry needling. Acupuncture is NOT dry needling. Acupuncture is the cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine, which requires a University equivalent degree to complete; dry needling is based on Trigger-Point therapy, learned through short courses. These courses are generally undertaken by massage therapists, physios, osteos and chiros, which only require an 8-12 hour course to complete.

Herbal Medicine. After your consultation, herbal medicine will be dispensed. We use practitioner only herbals and supplements, dispensed either with single liquids, or ready-made pill/powder formulations. Single liquids are usually handed out in 200ml bottles, comprising a remedy that is specific to your presenting condition. A standard 200ml bottle usually lasts 2 weeks, at a cost of $45.00. Some herbals are more expensive - such as Korean Ginseng and Golden Seal - which will incur additional charges.
